February 22, 2018 "Not so Dead" February Gardens
6:30 PM Monthly Meeting Zilker Park - Garden Center - Auditorium
The Garden Club of Austin is hosting their second monthly of 2018 on the evening February 22nd. And what a TIMELY program it will be! Merrideth Jiles, locally renown horticultural and horticulture staff manager at Zilker Botanical Garden will be discussing “What do you do now that everything in your garden seems dead?”

Come join us for an evening of light refreshments, socializing, as well as the important skinny on how to “fix” you’re not-quite-so-dead landscape. Doors open at 6:30, the meeting starts with snacks and visiting at 7:00 and usually ends by 9. FREE. For additional information please visit our web site at www.thegardenclubofaustin.org or call 512-468-9991.

Board meeting (4:30 - 6:30 pm)

Cultivars

The club cultivar process is changing this year. To offset the cost of some of the seedlings, club members who choose to participate in the cultivar competition will be charged $1. This fee will entitle participants to receive five plants for the competition, two tomatoes and three flowers. You can sign up at the January meeting or contact Joe Yura (yura@mail.utexas.edu) to reserve your plants.

This year the tomato cultivar will be Red Robin, a dwarf plant only twelve inches high, and we will be displaying the entire plant in 10 in. pots. You will also have the option to display only the tomatoes that are about an inch in diameter. Since this tomato can be grown indoors, we are hoping there will be greater participation in our competition. It will be distributed at our February meeting. The flower for this year will be announced at the January meeting and distributed at a later meeting so it will be at its peak for the June Show.

Welcome to one of Austin's most dynamic gardening clubs - the "go-to" club for tips, knowledge and shared expertise and experience on gardening in Central Texas. Whether you are a long-time "green thumb" used to the vagrancies of our climate and growing conditions, new to the area, or just developing an interest in gardening, you'll find The Garden Club of Austin (TGCOA) a great resource - and a fun organization.

Founded in 1953 as the Men's Garden Club of Austin, the club changed its name to the Garden Club of Austin in 2002, opening up it s membership to anyone interested in gardening. Today the club is the city's oldest and most respected garden clubs with a busy and active calendar of events.

In addition to our monthly club meetings, which include refreshments, presentations, demonstrations on gardening topics and frequently a wonderful selection of plants raffled at the end of most meetings, the club also organizes excursions, an annual flower and vegetable show, plant auction and plant sales.

The Club supports a variety of activities and related organizations, including the Austin Area Garden Council (AAGC), and the annual Zilker Garden Festival.

The Garden Club of Austin (a.k.a. Men's Garden Club of Austin) is organized and operates exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes as a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization. Gifts are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
